What Is DPI?
DPI means dots per inch. In practical terms, it tells you how much pixel detail your image will have when printed at a specific physical size. The same file can look sharp on a small print and blurry on a large one, which is why print size matters just as much as pixel dimensions.
If your design is 3600 pixels wide and you print it at 12 inches, the width resolves to 300 DPI. Stretch that same file to 24 inches and it drops to 150 DPI. What Is the Best DPI for Print on Demand?
200-299 DPI: Good
Often acceptable for t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, and smaller POD products. Many customers will not notice a quality drop at normal viewing distance.
Below 200 DPI: Risky
Low-resolution files can look soft or pixelated, especially on larger prints. Resize, re-export, or upscale the art before you send it to production.
How to Calculate DPI Manually
The formula
Divide your image width in pixels by the print width in inches. Do the same for the height. The lower of the two numbers is the effective DPI you should trust.
3600 px / 12 in = 300 DPI
Common print sizes at 300 DPI
- 5 x 7 inches: 1500 x 2100 px
- 8 x 10 inches: 2400 x 3000 px
- 12 x 12 inches: 3600 x 3600 px
- 24 x 36 inches: 7200 x 10800 px
